How Does Location Targeting Work?

Places targeting engages users who geo-tag specific locations on Instagram. It's most powerful for local businesses (restaurants, gyms, salons, retail shops) where your audience is geographic — not for global brands.

How to add a location

  1. Open your task → Target Settings
  2. Pick Places as the target type
  3. Type the location name (e.g. Waterloo London  , Equinox Gym Manhattan  )
  4. Pick from the dropdown that appears — Instagram shows matching geo-tags
  5. Click Save

⚠️ Place-based targets have lower limits than other types. Add multiple specific places rather than relying on a single one.

What makes a good Place target

✅ Specific venues that your ideal customer would tag:

  • Gyms (e.g. Equinox SoHo  )
  • Restaurants & cafés
  • Hotels & resorts
  • Retail stores
  • Event venues
  • Co-working spaces
  • Tourist attractions

✅ Active locations — search the place on Instagram and check that posts are recent (within the last week)

✅ In your service area if you're a local business

What to avoid

❌ Entire cities or countries (New York  , London  , USA  ) — too broad, mixed audiences, low targeting precision

❌ Generic places (Coffee Shop  , Restaurant  ) — Instagram has thousands of identically-named places; you'll target nothing useful

❌ Locations with no recent activity (search the place — if last post is 6 months old, skip)

❌ Locations outside your audience — targeting Eiffel Tower   is meaningless unless you sell to tourists

Strategy by business type

Business Good Place targets
Local gym / fitness studio Competitor gyms, fitness studios, healthy restaurants nearby
Restaurant / café Other restaurants in the area, nearby hotels, local landmarks
Salon / spa Other salons, beauty retailers, hotels
Retail store Neighboring stores, shopping districts, related boutiques
Event-based Venues that host similar events, festival locations
Tourism Hotels, attractions, transit hubs in destination

  • 5–15 locations at a time
  • Mix venue sizes — popular landmarks + smaller niche spots
  • Refresh every 4–6 weeks — venue trends shift
  • Combine with Followers/Likers of local influencers in the same area for stronger reach

Common mistakes

  • ❌ Picking only one place (concentration risk)
  • ❌ Targeting cities instead of venues
  • ❌ Forgetting that Places have lower throughput than other targets — over-relying on them slows your overall campaign
  • ❌ Never checking if the location still gets active posts

Combine with Country Filter

If you target a place in Manhattan   but want to ONLY engage US-based users (not tourists), turn on Country Filter → Whitelist → United States in the same task. Combines Place precision with country-level cleanup.
