Custom Direct Message

Direct messages are the most powerful — and the riskiest — engagement action you can run. A well-written DM can convert a stranger into a customer in seconds. A poorly-written one can earn you a safety pause within an hour.

This guide shows you how to set up custom DMs properly so they convert without burning your account.

When to use Custom DMs (and when not to)

Use Custom DMs when:

  • ✅ The account is at least 30 days old and has been running engagement for 7+ days
  • ✅ You're DMing people you've already followed or liked (not cold strangers)
  • ✅ You have a clear value to offer (a question, a freebie, a relevant service)
  • ✅ You have 5+ unique message variations ready

Skip Custom DMs when:

  • ❌ Your account is brand new (under 30 days)
  • ❌ You're running cold outreach without any prior engagement
  • ❌ You only have 1–2 message templates (Instagram catches identical DMs fast)
  • ❌ You're already running aggressive Likes + Comments + Follows

💡 DMs work best after warming up the audience first. Run Likes + Follows for a week, then turn on DMs to message the same people.

Where to find it

Open your task → scroll to Send Direct Messages in the task settings.

Toggle it on and you'll see two main fields:

  1. Message templates — where you write what to send
  2. DMs per day — how many to send (your daily limit)

Writing your message templates

You can write either multiple complete messages or one Spintax template that generates many variations. Use whichever is easier — we explain both below.

Method 1: Multiple complete messages

Write each message on its own line. Wolf Engager Pro picks one at random for each DM.

Hey, thanks for checking out our page! Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi! Saw you're into the same niche — happy to chat anytime.
What's up! Appreciate the support. Drop us a message if there's anything we can help with.

Method 2: Spintax — many variations from one template

Spintax lets you mash multiple options into a single template using {option1|option2|option3}    syntax. Wolf Engager Pro picks one variation each time.

Simple example:

{Hi|Hey|What's up} {{full_name}}, {great|awesome} content!

This single line generates 6 unique messages:

  • "Hi Mike Johnson, great content!"
  • "Hey Mike Johnson, awesome content!"
  • "What's up Mike Johnson, great content!"
  • (and 3 more)

Real example for outreach:

{Hey|Hi|What's up} {{full_name}}, just wanted to {drop in|stop by|say hi} and thank you for checking out our page. Let me know if you have any questions about our {store|brand|products}. Happy to help! {💯|🔥|👋}

This one template alone generates 243 unique variations — every DM looks freshly written.

💡 Aim for at least 50 possible variations. That's the threshold where Instagram's duplicate-detection stops flagging your messages.

Variables — auto-fill the user's info

Drop these into your message and Wolf Engager Pro fills them in for each recipient:

Variable Becomes
{{username}}    The user's Instagram handle (e.g. mike_johnson   )
{{full_name}}    Their display name (e.g. Mike Johnson   )

💡 {{full_name}}    is more personal than {{username}}   . Use it whenever possible. If their display name is empty, the system falls back to their username.

Example using both:

Hi {{full_name}} ({{username}}), thanks for the support! Let me know if there's anything we can help with.

DMs are the action with the lowest safe ceiling. Keep these well below your Likes/Follows numbers:

Account age DMs per day
New (under 30 days) Don't run DMs yet — focus on Likes and Follows first
30–60 days 5–10 per day
60+ days, no recent pauses 15–25 per day
Aged accounts with strong history 30–50 per day

The first DM matters most. Don't send a 200-character pitch as your opening message — keep your first DM under 100 characters, conversational, and end with a question.

Three places DMs appear in Wolf Engager Pro

There are three separate DM features. Custom Direct Messages is one of them — make sure you're configuring the right one:

Feature What it does Where in UI
Send Direct Messages Sends a DM to people you target during the engagement workflow This section
Welcome DM Sends a DM automatically when someone new follows you Welcome DM    section
Pending DM Reply Auto-replies to messages sitting in your DM requests folder Pending DM    section

This guide covers Send Direct Messages. The other two have their own setup guides.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ❌ Sending the same exact message to everyone — single biggest cause of DM-related pauses
  • ❌ Including a URL in every DM — Instagram flags repetitive links fast. Put your link in only some variations (using Spintax)
  • ❌ Long DMs (200+ chars) as the first message — short, conversational openers convert better and look safer
  • ❌ DMing strangers cold — engage them first (like a post, view a story) so it doesn't look out of the blue
  • ❌ Setting daily limit too high on a new account — start at 5–10/day max
  • ❌ Forgetting to include {{full_name}}    or {{username}}    — generic "Hey!" feels mass-sent

What "good" DM templates look like

❌ Bad (generic, salesy, repetitive):

Hi! Check out our amazing products at www.yoursite.com! Don't miss out!

✅ Good (personal, conversational, varied):

{Hey|Hi} {{full_name}}, {love what you're doing|appreciate the support}! {Any questions about|Curious about} our {brand|store}? {Happy to help|Let me know} 👋

✅ Even better (with light value-add):

{Hey|Hi} {{full_name}}, {saw your recent post — really cool|appreciate the follow}! By the way, we just dropped a {new collection|fresh batch of} {limited pieces|seasonal items}. {Want me to send you a quick look|Want first dibs}? 🔥
